Music

All the music on here is saved in MP3 format. MP3 is a compression system which basically works by stripping out all the bits of the sound which can't be heard by the human ear. At least, that's the theory. In practice if you compress it too much it sounds bloomin awful. Each file on this site is compressed to 112kbps which is not the highest quality, but it's ok - the higher the bitrate, the bigger the file and as we've got loads of music on here, we'd soon run out of space if we put them at 198kbps (which is what we'd prefer). If you'd like full quality versions of the tracks, contact us.

The best way to save the MP3s onto your computer is:

  • right-click onto the link

  • choose "Save target as" (Internet Explorer) or "Save link as" (Firefox)

  • choose a location on your hard-drive that you will be able to find later (eg My Documents)

  • click "Save"

The file will then download and you can listen to it whenever you wish. If you just click on the filename (ie left-click) it will download to a temporary folder hidden in the depths of your computer. It will play straight away but if you want to give it another listen, you'll probably have to download it again. If you're having problems with it, contact us and we'll try to help.

If you don't have any software which plays MP3s (though you probably do - just try playing one and see what happens), we can recommend MusicMatch Jukebox. The basic player is free, though you can buy an upgrade which allows you to do, um, several other things. Can't remember the difference 'cos it's years since I bought the upgrade. Anyway, it's good stuff.

Mac users: apparently some Mac users have been having problems (which makes a change from their usual sanctimony...). If anyone finds a suitable solution for Mac users, please contact us.

Note about AOL: there's no reason why the above shouldn't work on AOL but as they like to confuse everyone, they have their own system for almost everything so if you get stuck all I can suggest is to look through their help section or contact them. (I used AOL for a while and I will never never do so again.)

Artwork

All the covers measure 12cm x 24 cm and are 150 dpi resolution (which is good enough for domestic printers).
To ensure they print properly, it's better not to print them from your browser - as they apparently do something technical to pictures which means they print out much larger than they should. One solution is to save the picture to your computer and open it in a photo editing program like Microsoft Photo Editor or Adobe Photoshop - you probably got a free one with your printer software. You need to check the picture's the right size and the paper size is set to landscape.

Alternatively, here's a way to do it using Microsoft Word:
  • Open the picture by clicking on the small version on the artist page
  • The picture will take a few moments to download
  • Right-click with the mouse on the picture and select copy from the little menu
  • Open Microsoft Word
  • From the file menu choose page setup
  • Choose paper size and click on the word landscape. Click OK.
  • Now paste the picture onto the page.
  • Right-click with the mouse on the picture and select format picture from the little menu
  • Choose size and change the height to 12cm and the width to 24cm (doesn't matter if it goes to 11.99cm and 23.99cm - it's near enough!).
  • Click OK.
  • Now you can print the page.
